Leading and Following

Daily writing prompt
Are you a leader or a follower?

Are you a leader or a follower?

Am I a Leader or a Follower? Honestly—Both.

It’s a question that often comes up in interviews, workshops, and even late-night conversations: Are you a leader or a follower? For me, the answer isn’t one or the other—it’s both.

From a young age, I found myself stepping into leadership roles, often naturally. Whether it was school projects, group activities, or even organizing small events, I was usually the one taking initiative, offering direction, and helping others find their footing. Leadership felt like a calling, not a title—something I grew into rather than something I claimed.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve always led—or that I always should.

There’s something powerful about being a good follower, too. I’ve learned that following someone who inspires you, who brings out the best in you, is not a weakness—it’s wisdom. If I see something good in someone, something worth learning or emulating, I don’t hesitate to follow. Growth often begins with humility, and knowing when to listen, learn, and support is just as important as knowing when to lead.

To me, leadership isn’t about being in charge or having control. A true leader doesn’t boss people around—they guide, they help, they uplift. A leader walks in front, not just when it’s easy, but also when it’s hard—through success and failure, good days and the not-so-good ones. And most importantly, a good leader remembers what it’s like to be in the follower’s shoes.

That perspective changes everything. It builds empathy, trust, and a deeper connection with those we lead. Because the best leaders never really leave the path—they just walk a little ahead to light the way.

At the same time, I’ve come to appreciate the moments when I’m not the one leading. Following someone with vision, wisdom, or strength in areas where I’m still growing can be incredibly empowering. It takes confidence to lead—but it takes self-awareness to follow.

So yes, I am a leader. And yes, I am a follower. I lead when I’m called to, and I follow when I see value in someone else’s path. Both roles have shaped who I am—and both are essential in the journey of growth.
