Why I Stopped Asking People for Advice (and Where I Turn Instead)

There was a time when I used to seek advice from people I admired — mentors, peers, even friends I believed had life figured out in ways I hadn’t yet. I’ve always looked up to certain individuals, and I still do. Admiration doesn’t fade easily when it’s rooted in respect. But somewhere along the way, something shifted.

I stopped turning to people for advice.

Not because I suddenly became wise or had all the answers. Far from it. I still face decisions that make me overthink, moments where I feel stuck, and situations where I wish someone would just tell me what to do. But what changed was this: I realized that the kind of thinking I needed — the kind that challenges convention, explores nuance, or sees around corners — wasn’t easy to find in the people around me.

It’s not arrogance. It’s alignment.

Too often, I’d find myself walking away from conversations feeling unheard, or worse, misunderstood. I’d bring an idea to the table, only to watch it be trimmed down to fit someone else’s framework. Their advice came from their experience, their fears, their version of reality — not mine.

So I quietly stopped asking.

Instead, I turned to the infinite, slightly chaotic, beautifully diverse world of online information. Google became my sounding board. AI became my brainstorming partner. Podcasts, forums, essays from strangers halfway across the globe — these became my circle of advisors. And oddly enough, it worked.

The internet doesn’t try to validate or doubt you. It just gives you options, perspectives, and patterns. And when you’ve developed your own lens to see the world through, sometimes that’s all you need — a spark, not a steering wheel.

I still admire people. That hasn’t changed. But I’ve learned that admiration doesn’t have to come with expectation. Some people are just meant to inspire from a distance — and that’s okay.

So if you’ve ever felt like you’re outgrowing the advice around you, or like your questions are echoing into silence, know that you’re not alone. It doesn’t mean you’re lost. It might just mean you’re ready to guide yourself differently.
