Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?
There’s a quote I carry with me everywhere—not in my pocket, not in my phone, but in my mind and heart. It’s simple, almost too simple at first glance:
“Everything will pass.”
At one point in life, I stumbled upon this line, and over time, it quietly became a mantra for me. It didn’t come with fireworks or fanfare, but it settled into my being like an old friend who knows just what to say in the best and worst of times.
In difficult moments—when I’ve felt stuck, heartbroken, anxious, or just overwhelmed—this quote whispers to me: “This is temporary. This too shall pass.” And somehow, just knowing that whatever I’m going through has an expiration date gives me the strength to hold on. I don’t spiral as deeply. I don’t catastrophize. I breathe. I take the next step. Because I know I won’t feel this way forever.
But what really surprised me was how this quote shaped my experience of happiness too. It’s easy to assume that wisdom is only for tough times, but “everything will pass” shows up just as strongly in moments of joy. When life is good—when I’m laughing with friends, sitting under the sun, feeling light and full—I remind myself that even this won’t last forever.
And before you think that sounds depressing, let me explain.
Knowing that joy is fleeting doesn’t make it sad—it makes it sacred. It makes me present. I don’t take moments for granted. I soak them in. I don’t rush to post it or bottle it up. I just live it. Because I know this moment, just like every other, is passing through me.
That’s the magic of it—everything will pass. The highs, the lows, the victories, the setbacks. And somewhere in that rhythm, I’ve found a kind of balance. I’m no longer chasing after forever or running from pain. I just am, moving with the flow of life rather than fighting it.
It’s not about being indifferent. It’s about being at peace—with the rising and the falling, the coming and going.
So when life feels like too much—or when it feels like it’s not enough—I return to this truth. Softly. Quietly. Powerfully.
Everything will pass.
And because of that, I keep going.
