Have I ever been camping? Oh yes! Not the typical tent-in-the-mountains kind, but something even more unique—inside a school, of all places. Back in high school, we went on Scouts and Guides camps that were unlike anything else. We didn’t have fancy tents or sleeping bags; instead, we pushed a few benches together and slept right there—no sheets, no pillows, just the excitement of being with friends.
Those camps were a blend of fun, learning, and a pinch of beautiful chaos. Days began early, often with the whistle of a scout leader and a scramble to freshen up using buckets of water and shared mirrors. What followed was a mix of drills, group activities, and hands-on learning that made textbooks feel like ancient relics. We built makeshift gadgets with ropes and sticks, learned first aid, tied a hundred kinds of knots (most of which I’ve forgotten now!), and even picked up bits of discipline that surprisingly stuck.
The best part? The evenings. As the sun dipped and the school playground turned golden, we’d come alive. Twigs, dry leaves, and whatever burnable we could find became our firewood. Lighting that campfire felt like a mini ritual—everyone pitched in, and once the flames danced, so did we. Campfire time meant songs (sometimes off-key), skits, laughter, and stories under the open sky. It felt like we were in our own little world, away from the usual rules, wrapped in the glow of friendship and firelight.
Meals were simple—just rice, dal, and maybe a vegetable or two—but when we sat together, cross-legged on the floor, they somehow felt like a royal spread. We’d share bites, swap side dishes, and laugh over how this was practically “hotel food” compared to our everyday lunch boxes. It wasn’t fancy, but in that moment, it was absolutely perfect.
By nightfall, our energy would dip, but our spirits never did. We’d collapse onto our bench-beds, too tired to notice the hardness underneath. No complaints, just content sighs and sleepy murmurs. Sleep came quickly, and morning came quicker. Trekking, games, and the thrill of what the next day held kept us going.
And when the camp ended, oh the stories we carried back! The tales of midnight giggles, the legendary camp skits, the friendly rivalries during team tasks—they were all told and retold to friends and family until they became part of our personal legend.
Looking back now, I miss those days with all my heart. Those school camps were more than just a week away from home—they were about freedom, discovery, and the pure, unfiltered joy of being young and surrounded by friends. They taught us lessons that no classroom ever could and gave us memories that still glow, much like those campfires, long after the flames have died down.
