My Life-Changing Decision With No Regret

Daily writing prompt
Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.

Some of the risks I’ve taken have been carefully planned, while others came from a place of pure instinct. Thankfully, I don’t regret most of them. But if I had to choose one that truly transformed me, it would be the leap I took in my middle age: stepping into the unfamiliar world of computer applications.

At the time, things weren’t easy. I was going through a financial crunch, and my young son, just a preschooler then, needed me around the clock. Between managing the household, tending to his needs, and juggling everyday responsibilities, the idea of going back to school felt more like a fantasy than a possibility. But deep down, something kept nudging me forward, quietly pushing me toward a better future.

With a mix of courage and uncertainty, I enrolled in a postgraduate diploma course in computer applications. It was a bold move. IT (Information Technology) and computers weren’t nearly as popular or accessible in my country back then as it is today. The fees were steep, the subject matter was tough, and waves of self-doubt hit me often. Still, I pressed on. I was fortunate to have the support of my second sister, who stood by me like a rock. She helped me pay the fees and cheered me on at every step. Her faith in me made all the difference.

I studied with everything I had—late nights, early mornings, every spare moment spent with my nose buried in textbooks or practicing on the computer (Individuals couldn’t own computers then since it was too costly and had to be kept in air-conditioned room). It was a constant juggle between chapters and chores, between learning something entirely new and managing a household. There were moments I questioned myself, but I never gave up.

Then, something incredible happened. Even before my results were out, I was offered a job at a reputed institution. That one opportunity changed everything. It gave me a fresh start, a sense of purpose, and a platform to continue growing. From there, I kept learning, gaining confidence, and sharpening my skills. The door that once seemed closed had not only opened—it led to a hallway of possibilities.

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of the choice I made. Today, I can confidently say I’m computer savvy—something I once believed was out of my reach. More importantly, I proved to myself that it’s never too late to learn, grow, or rewrite your story. Since then, I’ve changed jobs several times in pursuit of better opportunities, and each time I’ve carried with me the lessons from that brave decision.

Taking that leap wasn’t easy. But it was absolutely worth it. And I have no regrets.
