Cherished Memories Of Family Traditions, Uzhunnappam, Vattayappam, pezahapal

I have always cherished the warmth and joy that enveloped our family during festive seasons, especially when my parents were alive. Among the numerous traditions, a few hold a special place in my heart.

Onam, Christmas, and Easter Gatherings: The festive trinity of Onam, Christmas, and Easter brought the entire family together. The vibrant energy during these occasions was contagious. As children, the anticipation of receiving money for Parish festivals added an extra layer of excitement. Parish festivals allowed us the freedom to indulge in items we fancied, creating lasting memories of joyous celebrations.

Christmas Tree Surprises: Christmas was a magical time, marked by the grand Christmas tree outside the Church. Our parents generously gave us money to pluck gifts from its festive branches. The thrill of discovering surprises hidden among the ornaments heightened the festive spirit, making it a tradition I looked forward to each year.

Maundy Thursday: Maundy Thursday held a special charm. We’d venture to neighbors’ houses and welcome them into our own, celebrating Passover together. The aroma of unleavened bread filled the air, mingling with the sweetness of coconut milk with palm leaf Cross, used for a unique festive drink. The tables overflowed with diverse dishes and colorful fruits. At the center, a large unleavened bread adorned with a cross made from palm leaves, a memento from Palm Sunday, held pride of place. My father, as the head of the family, would cut the bread and distribute it to everyone gathered, along with a glass of the special milk after prayers. The room echoed with joyful chatter as we reveled in the delicious foods, then eagerly headed to the next house with long coconut leaf torches which illuminated the path as we made our way to continue the celebration in the next house. It was a night teeming with laughter and unity, a perfect prelude to the somber introspection of the following Good Friday morning.

Simplicity in a Pre-Technological Era: In an era devoid of televisions, computers, and phones, these festivals were our main source of entertainment. The absence of modern distractions allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the festivities, creating genuine connections with family and neighbors.

As I reflect on these cherished family traditions, I am reminded of the simplicity, warmth, and togetherness that defined those moments. They are a reminder of the importance of family, community, and celebrating life’s special occasions.
