Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

Kochi, with its vibrant mix of history, spice-scented air, and swaying palms, boasts countless treasures. Yet, there remains a corner unfurled, a story unread – a nearby attraction that whispers forgotten promises each time I pass. It’s not Munnar’s emerald hills or Mattancherry’s fragrant spice markets, but a smaller, lesser-known gem nestled within spitting distance of my own home.

The Mattanchery Dutch Cemetery, whispered-about for its weathered tombstones and tales of colonial ghosts, sits just beyond my usual haunts. I’ve passed its lichen-painted gate countless times, drawn in by the promise of ancient stories etched in stone, yet always deflected by a pressing errand or a familiar cafe’s beckoning aroma. Perhaps it’s the morbid allure of faded epitaphs, or the intrigue of whispers about restless spirits wandering under the mango trees. Whatever the reason, the cemetery lingers, a tantalizing enigma waiting to be unraveled.

This year, amidst resolutions for mindful exploration, I vow to finally answer the cemetery’s silent call. To wander its moss-carpeted paths, decipher the secrets carved into timeworn slabs, and let the tales of a bygone era wash over me. Perhaps I’ll even find a sliver of history tucked away in a forgotten corner, a piece of Kochi’s past woven into the very fabric of my own neighborhood. Who knows, the allure of the local might hold the most profound discoveries, waiting just beyond the doorstep, ready to be unearthed.

So, this year, when the familiar beckons, I’ll pause, listen to the whispers of the unexplored, and embrace the unknown corners of my own story. For sometimes, the most breathtaking adventures lie not in far-flung destinations, but in the hidden gems right under our noses, patiently waiting to be discovered.
