What could you try for the first time?

I could try making an apple pie for the first time. I love to eat apple pie. The American apple pies are awesome. The thought of creating that delicious, warm, and comforting dessert from scratch is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. In this culinary adventure, I embark on the journey of making my very first homemade American apple pie.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

For the Pie Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6-8 tablespoons ice water

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6-7 medium-sized apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

Prepare the Pie Crust:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter and work it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. You may not need all 8 tablespoons, so add just enough to form a dough.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal portions, form them into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Prepare the Apple Filling:

  1. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.

Roll Out the Pie Crust:

  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out one of the pie crust discs into a 12-inch circle. This will be the bottom crust.

Assemble the Pie:

  1. Carefully place the bottom crust in a 9-inch pie dish, ensuring it covers the bottom and sides.
  2. Add the apple filling to the crust, mounding it slightly in the center.

Roll Out the Top Crust:

  • Roll out the second pie crust disc into a 12-inch circle. This will be the top crust.

Create the Pie Top:

  • You can either place the whole top crust over the apples and cut slits for venting, or create a lattice pattern by cutting the crust into strips and weaving them together.

Seal and Bake:

  1. Trim any excess crust and fold the edges of the top crust under the bottom crust. Crimp the edges to seal the pie.
  2. Optional: Brush the top crust with a beaten egg for a shiny finish.
  3. Place the pie on a baking sheet (to catch any drips) and bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Embarking on this journey to bake my first American apple pie has been a delightful experience. The aroma of cinnamon and warm apples filled my kitchen as I anxiously awaited the final result. As I enjoyed that first slice of homemade pie, I couldn’t help but savor the sweet, comforting taste that’s a hallmark of American cuisine. With a sense of accomplishment, I look forward to many more culinary adventures in the future.
