Write about your most epic baking or cooking fail.

One month after my marriage, my husband and I embarked on our new life together in a bustling city. It was a time of excitement and anticipation, but little did I know that it would also be marked by one of my most epic cooking failures.

You see, prior to getting married, I had never set foot in a kitchen. My culinary skills were virtually non-existent, but I was determined to learn. I decided to start with something simple – cooking rice. How hard could it be, right?

With unwavering confidence, I filled a pot with water, added the washed rice, and placed it on the stove. While the rice was simmering away, I thought it would be a good idea to make an egg omelet to go along with it. Little did I know that this seemingly straightforward task would soon become another chapter in my cooking fail saga.

I whipped up the eggs and poured them into a hot pan with the stove on full flame mode, and within a few minutes I was greeted by a sight that can only be described as culinary catastrophe – my once-promising omelet had transformed into a charred, inedible mass of bitterness. In a last-ditch effort to salvage the situation, I begrudgingly tossed it into the waste bin.

But the drama was far from over. I went back to check on the rice, having absolutely no idea how long it should cook. In my ignorance, I assumed that it would be ready by now. To my shock and dismay, when I dipped a spoon into the pot, I found not fluffy, separate grains of rice but a gooey, porridge-like substance.

Panic set in, and I immediately called my husband for advice. Bless his heart; he didn’t want to discourage my first cooking endeavor, so he suggested a creative solution. “Why not add some coconut and jaggery to it? We can turn it into a sweet porridge,” he suggested optimistically.

So, instead of the perfectly cooked rice and egg omelet I had envisioned, we ended up with a sweet, coconut-jaggery porridge that afternoon. It was an unexpected twist to our meal plans, to say the least.

However, it became abundantly clear that my culinary experiments were not going in the right direction. To prevent further kitchen mishaps and perhaps to save our taste buds, my husband took charge and soon hired a maid to handle the cooking duties.

In retrospect, that epic cooking fail was a humbling experience that taught me the importance of starting small and gradually building my culinary skills. It also made for a hilarious story to share with friends and family, as we all had a good laugh about my “sweet” rice porridge mishap.

And so, my adventures in the kitchen continued, albeit with a newfound appreciation for the culinary arts and a deep respect for those who make it look so effortless. But now I too have become expert in preparing mouth watering dishes.
